Amboseli National Park
Amboseli National Park, located in southern Kenya, is one of the country’s most popular and iconic wildlife destinations. Crowned by the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, Amboseli is often called the “Home of the African Elephant”. The park’s name comes from a Maasai word meaning “salty dust,” reflecting its semi-arid landscape.
Covering an area of about 392 square kilometers, Amboseli offers visitors a unique blend of diverse habitats, including dried-up lake beds, wetlands, savannah, and woodlands. This variety of ecosystems supports an impressive array of wildlife, making it one of the best places in Africa to view large herds of elephants up close
Besides elephants, the park is home to many other iconic African animals such as lions, cheetahs, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, and over 600 species of birds. The park’s relatively sparse vegetation, due to long dry seasons, makes wildlife viewing particularly rewarding.
One of Amboseli’s most striking features is the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro, which provides breathtaking views, especially during early mornings. The park also offers visitors the opportunity to interact with the local Maasai community and experience their authentic culture.
